OK, here's a sentence you don't see every day

quote [ Diane Keaton was rushed to hospital after hurting herself during a sumo wrestling match. ]

Confused Dog

quote [ My dog Emma was a bit confused by the fact that she was watching my cat on the computer. At one point she actually goes over to see the cat in her box to make sure she is really there. LOL ]

Made extended the main entry.

Self Tuning Compiler

quote [ Initial IBM experiments conducted on IBM System p servers achieved an average 18 percent performance improvement on embedded-application benchmarks...it normally takes application developers many months to get their software running at an acceptable level of performance. Milepost GCC can reduce the amount of time it takes to reach that level by a factor of 10. ]

Fancy that, a computer doing the job faster than humans. (Picture not related - robot of the day on robots.net)

Organic Farms as Subdivision Amenities

quote [ "We preserved forest and pasture, and there were 20 acres left for an organic farm, and we also have a large wildflower meadow,” Mr. Nygren said. “We’ve set up the design so 90 percent of the houses back up to one of those natural amenities. We are selling our lots at a premium that’s probably three times what the raw lot is." ]

I've long thought that developers would be very wise to use permanent farms as centerpieces to new housing subdivisions.

Scientists Discover Common Genetic Basis For Manic Depression/Bi-Polarism and Schizophrenia

quote [ Scientists have discovered a remarkable similarity between the genetic faults behind both schizophrenia and manic depression in a breakthrough that is expected to open the way to new treatments for two of the most common mental illnesses, affecting millions of people. Previously doctors had assumed that the two conditions were quite separate. ]

Here's to hoping this leads to work that will change some people's lives.

SE Complilation: ANTS! Society/organization/communication and more

quote [ Eusociality (Greek eu: "good/real" + "social") has certain features:

Reproductive division of labor (with or without sterile castes)
Overlapping generations
Cooperative care of young ]

All this any reading has made me curious about communication/organization and behavior in non-human society. Especially on a smaller scale. Can any of you SEers recommend some good reading/posts/places to dig up more information? I've included what I consider some interesting links below.
