quote [ The Public Broadcasting System's taxpayer-funded "Sesame Street" has, at cursory glance, presented young American children with what colorfully appears to be one of television's few safe havens of educational fun.
Yet, embedded in its visually intoxicating muppetry and otherwise innocently entertaining educational content there lurks highly controversial political messages designed to promote multiculturalism and global citizenship ] Rage against the Muppet, Adam Baldwin!
What next, "Monsters are entitled to their opinions and those opinions deserve equal respect to humans"?

See, I don't get how some Americans are so against multiculturalism. Multiculturalism created American culture, which is a blend of the cultures of all of our immigrants. At the Founding, the country had mostly British, French, and Spanish cultures and traditions and it evolved as more immigrants from more places arrived with their natives cultures. Back then, the WASPs made a big deal about other foreign cultures destroying American culture and it was blatantly racist with things like "the Yellow Peril." Complaining about multiculturalism today is just as xenophobic and, often, racist as it was two hundred years ago. Culture is an organic and non-exclusive thing. It changes over time and we can have more than one culture active in a given area at one time. |

One of the interesting things about the internet- specifically Twitter, in my experience- is that you get a really fascinating look into the personal lives of some celebrities. For some, this is fantastic. Nathan Fillion and Neil Gaiman, for instance, seem to be just as awesome as I could have hoped. In other cases, this is awful. I followed Adam Baldwin for about three days before I decided it was best not to ruin stuff like Firefly and Chuck by associating his real world views with his characters. On the other hand, my mom thinks he's great. |
