Philosophy lectures by Rick Roderick

Excellent lectures by the late continental philosopher Rick Roderick. Practicing in a unpretentious and socratic method that is sadly absent from most of the academy. Unfortunately I only heard of Roderick after his death. Thankfully his unique style and enthusiasm have been recorded and are available for free.

A few minutes into the first video, and I'm already feeling somewhat iffy here. Strawperson argument? Really?

How is a professor supposed to speak? Roderick is from west Texas and often speaks in a way we wouldn't expect from a professor of philosophy. He was an intelligent man who refused to put on airs and veil himself in pretension. He published a book about Habermas. I think that speaks to intelligence more than his quaint speech.

well yeah but every fucking phil dis has been about habermas for the last 15 years.

I think you might be reading something into my comment that isn't there.

My comment wasn't about his accent or mannerisms. I could barely be persuaded to give less than a third of a shit about someone's speech patterns or accent if thier points were valid. But the whole business of removing "man" from words is just silly (as demonstrated by the exchange above.) Reagrdless of surrounding content, I hear that shit and eyes roll inevitably skyward.

Er... No. Strawperson might be a good word for a discussion on how to take Political Correctness to ridiculous extremes, but it is not a valid word in any other context.*

* Well, perhaps when discussing mythological beings who might want to hang out with the Wizard's successor to the throne of Oz.

remember this was 20 years ago, when "political correctness" was a big thing. everyone had to stop making things gender specific.
Naruki said @ 2:01pm GMT on 10th Mar [Score:1 Insightful]
Technically they had to start making things non-gender specific, since most things were already made gender specific.

And PC is still with us. The funny thing is, it is pushed from both sides of the political spectrum, but for different purposes, and only the Right seems to be the ones who declare it complete shite (naturally making hypocrites of themselves, but that is what they do best).

it was very much tongue in cheek, i think he was getting into trouble for not being "politically correct" enough. in one lecture he makes a joke about it "significant others, significant other others, dogs, cats... I am just trying to cover the whole gamut here, to make this contemporary"
