EU Parliament threatens court action on anti-piracy treaty

quote [ A strong majority of MEPs (663 against and 13 in favour) today voted against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), arguing that it flouts agreed EU laws on counterfeiting and piracy online.

In addition, the Parliament's decision today states that MEPs will go to the Court of Justice if the EU does not reject ACTA rules, including cutting off users from the Internet "gradually" if caught stealing content. ]

Interestingly, most of the 13 assholes who voted against this proposition are from those quaint and charming anti-immigrant / pro-tradition fringe parties (UK and Netherlands in this instance).

In any case, for everything that's annoying about the Lisbon Treaty, it's nice that it actually gives Strasbourg the ability to smack around the Commission a bit when it starts getting too secretive and technocratic (See also: SWIFT).

I love the Lisbon Treaty. It's of course still far from being perfect, as was to be expected, but it was an absolute necessity and entered into force just in time.

The author needs a lesson in reducing ambiguity.

How can any regime of State penalties enforced by ISPs be compatible with Article Six of the EU Convention On Human Rights?

F00m, did you actually just mod me down for asking whether a crackdown on filesharers without due process is compatible with EU human rights law?

Did you actually, really just do that?
Dioxin said @ 1:53am GMT on 12th Mar
Are you seriously asking why stupid questions should be modded down? Seriously? For Real?
Nihil said @ 9:15pm GMT on 11th Mar
It isn't, and the Parliament by and large agrees. The resolution does in fact mention the respect of the HR Convention as one of the issues with ACTA.

Article 6, for those who don't know, was the basis used for thumbing down at the European level all those three-strikes laws proposed by various countries.
