quote [ "People are thinking that this has to do with fetuses being chopped up and put in our burritos," Shortey told NewsOK. "That's not the case. It's beyond that." ]
THIS is what we call full retard. I chose the Huffpo article because the other article had that annoying Meebo text highlighting crap. See extended for blog expanding on this story and another pro-life political loon.
Science blogger that uses HEK cells expands on the issue (you'll have to get past his dickish writing).
[sci&tech] [by bltrocker@7:02pmGMT] [+10 WTF] http://scienceblogs.com/erv/2012/01/oklahoma_senator_concerned_abo.php We got pro-life Superbowl ads again! By this guy! Hooray! (Actually I think it's pre/post game shows) Since I live in a market where he bought airtime (Denver area) and plan on watching the game, I'm sure I'll get to see one! http://www.cnn.com/2012/01/22/us/super-bowl-abortion-ads/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 Here is his insane call for donations http://www.terryforpresident.com/documents/tebow.pdf Here is where you can see the insane ads. Don't worry - Since he's signed up as a democrat candidate for president, the stations can't censor any of the commercials. http://www.terryforpresident.com/ |

From a HP poster "I know everyone is having fun making jokes about Soylant Green, etc; but take a moment to consider the specific wording of this bill: "The manufacture or sale of food or products which use aborted human fetuses." This would include any medicine or treatment that was made using stem cell research. Several vaccines - including Hepatitis A, chicken pox, and the rubella component of the MMR - are manufactured by culturing the virus inside cells that are derived from aborted fetuses. This bill would outlaw the sale or use of the most common form of those vaccines in Oklahoma. (The cells they're grown in were derived from fetuses that were aborted over 40 years ago. The continual use of fetal cell lines in vaccine manufacture does not cause the destruction of any embryos.)" |

As it says in the article, this bill won't do that. It is only about food or products that contain (rather than use) aborted human fetuses. They talk about the issues of stems cells in research into sweetners and say that it wouldn't cover that. |

Right. The whole issue stems from this retard seeing some pro-life propaganda and misunderstanding it even more than it's already skewed. Yes, human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells came from an aborted fetus once upon a time. The thing is the cells were immortalized (turned into forever-multiplying cancer cells) and are used in cell research everywhere. They are great cells because they are very much like a blank slate that you can put whatever you want in or on them (e.g. a receptor of interest) and observe the results. Using these cells gives you a human cell without most of the messy cell machinery that could confound delicate experiments. In this case, the contracted scientists are using them for something like maybe testing the response of certain receptors that they put into these cells to flavor compounds, then using that data to optimize a soda formula. It's absolutely retarded to think they are using altered HEK cells themselves as a flavoring ingredient, let alone that you would find a little slimy fetus foot in your Mountain Dew. FYI HEK cells are so far removed from what they originally were that Australian HEK cells behave differently than American HEK cells that behave differently than Japanese HEK cells. |

What has made them "so far removed from what they originally were" I believe was various splicing with living mouse cells to encourage growth, cell repopulation. |

I would also support a ban on aborted fetuses in food. I don't think it's happening ever, but yeah, it should probably be banned. in fact, it probably is already, though not specifically. |
